Jesus and His Apostles never ceased warning others of false prophets who would deceive by pretending to be Christians. “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many will come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4-5).
The Bible teaches the origin of all lies and falsehoods. It was in the Garden of Eden where Satan, speaking through the Serpent, deceived Eve. Adam was not deceived, yet chose to obey Eve in eating the fruit she gave him. Although we were not the ones who actually disobeyed the Lord in the Garden, He has decreed that all mankind experience the negative effects of sin. We all have inherited a sinful nature. But there is Good News.
Through Jesus Christ we inherit a new, holy nature which strives to please God. This is the meaning behind the phrase, ‘You must be born again.’ This birth is not caused by humans in any way. Rather, it is the sovereign gracious action of God in Christ, who gives it as He pleases. Once born from above, by the work of the Holy Spirit, we become new creations, with new desires and goals which are in agreement with God’s desires and goals for our lives.
Jesus encourages all to pray the Father for the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:9-13).
